Recent News Stories
This page contains some of the recent achievements of the Edgware SNT. The team have a number of roles. The most import one is to be the connection between the many communities of the Ward and the Police. Success in this role is proven by the large number of residents who know the team, either by sight or by name. The next role is to be the protectors of the community from people, both in and outside of the Ward, who look to do harm in and around Edgware. You might also like to read the Skipper's diary page
I'm
very pleased to tell you the Edgware SNT have won the Met Police
Diversity award 2010 for their efforts with the Nutmeg Project.
This is fantastic news , well done to everyone who has assisted
with the events and advent of Nutmeg. 1st place in the whole London
area is a tremendous achievement.
The team has changed a tad since he last update below. PC Spencer Beaumont has joined Steve Lucas as the two Constables on team, whilst PCSO Gemma Evans has also joined to fill the void left by Monique Mason.
Several new faces around the team in October 2009.... PC's Steve Garty and Aki Akiwumi left for pastures new, with their replacements being PC Steve Lucas, PC Rose Shephard (on a months loan from Hale SNT) and PC April Mcalister on a 6 month attachment.
PCSO's Steve Renny and Dionne Green leave the team to start their training as Police Constables... PCSO's Enzo Bertolone and Laura Bowen replace them from Training School.
September 2009, the 4th Nutmeg Community event takes place... Everyone2gether... 600 young people in attendance, again a great sucess...
March 2009. The Nutmeg Community does it again. This time, bigger and better. Over 550 youths and young adults attended the Parish Hall in Rectory Lane Edgware on 28th March for music, poetry, comedy and workshops. It was lovely to see some old faces, including Vicky-Louise Nasmyth-Miller, once a PC with our team and now the Ward Sergeant over at Coppets Ward.
This is now the third in the series and it's a big congratulations to Darwin, Claudio, Rui and all of the members of Nutmeg for their brilliant effort. Well done guys, you are a credit to this ward. Don't worry Sgt Dan and Fahad, we haven't forgotten who started it all.
We welcome the new Hub team, to be based at Edgware Bus Station. Part of the Barnet Safer Transport Team, the Edgware Hub Team will be out and about in the bus station as well as Station Road, parts of the High Street, Hale Lane and Deansbrook Road. Their patrol area is tight so that they can be a presence in the transport centres of both Edgware Ward and Hale Ward. More details as they come in.
February 2009. Well done to ALL of the team who, despite appalling weather conditions on Monday 2nd February, made it in to cover their full shifts. A special thanks to the PCSO who, unable to get a bus or lift, left extra early and walked into work. Commiserations to the SNT snowball team who were "white washed" by both the Stonegove and JFS teams. Better luck next time (hopefully in another 18 years).
January 2009. Sgt Dan Reid accompanied our local MP Andrew Dismore to 10 Downing Street.
Quoting
from Mr Dismore's web page;
Andrew Dismore, Labour Member of Parliament for Hendon, took
Edgware Safer Neighbour Team Sergeant Dan Reid to 10 Downing Street
for the Prime Ministers Community Champions reception
.
The reception is an annual event, to celebrate the achievements of true community heroes. Sergeant Reid is the team leader for the Edgware Team, and has been a pioneer of the successful community policing model in London.
Andrew Dismore MP said: As soon as the Prime Minister asked me to nominate a community hero to bring to No 10, I thought of Sgt Reid. While some MPs invited grandees and donors to charity, I wanted to celebrate the front-line staff who dedicate their lives to helping the community. I had a very enjoyable evening, as I hope did Sgt Reid I am delighted to have had this chance to reward him for his service above and beyond the call of duty.
The EWP held our Annual General Meeting, where it was announced
that our Deputy Chair, Laurence C., had been awarded a Chief Superintendent's
Commendation by the Borough Commander, Ch Sup David Tucker. This
is understood to be the first time that such a high honour has been
awarded to someone who is not a serving police officer, special
police officer or PCSO. Laurence was, understandably, thrilled and
delighted at the award which was completely unexpected.
December 2008. Edgware 2gether Xmas special event was held at the Parish Hall in Rectory Lane on the 13th. FIVE HUNDRED people came along and had a great time. There will be another one in March/April 2009. The organisers are now collectively known as NUTMEG, so see www.e2g.org.uk for details of the next event.
November
2008. A month of moves. PSCO After more than 3 years with the team,
Mark Prentice (seen in the photograph to the left behind PCSO Craig
Hyder) has now moved down to Hendon SNT and we welcome his replacement
PCSO Laura De-Jesus fresh from the Training School at Hendon. More
news on Laura will be found on "the meet the team" page,
as soon as the Skipper sends in a picture. We also welcome Holly's
replacement, PC Aki Akiwumi, a highly experienced officer from the
core teams in Colindale. Once again, Aki's details will appear on
the team page, but it's understood that he is yet another "Gunner".....
oh Arséne, not ANOTHER one!!!! Less than a month until Edgware
2gether's second event. Again, at the Parish Hall in Rectory Lane,
December's gig will be even better than the summer's one. Saturday
13th December from 6pm. Be there or be square, as they said in my
day.
October 2008. We say goodbye to PC Holly Brand, who returns to the Barnet core teams. Holly has been with us for a year and we shall miss her. Good luck with the upcoming wedding. Details of Holly's replacement will be posted here soon. Welcome to PCSO Neil Baldwin's replacement Myke, full details of whom will soon be on the "meet the team" page, but what I can tell you is that, although he was brought up in Tottenham, he is ANOTHER Gunner!!.
The Met have changed the NON-URGENT telephone numbers. Instead of calling a different number for each borough, the number is now 0300 123 1212. The number counts as a "geographic", the same as an 01 or 02 number, so if you have inclusive minutes, the call's free. If not, it costs the same as a cal to an 020 number (so we're told). Look out for an awareness ad campaign.
September 2008. Edgware 2gether, pronounced Edgware together. Organised by Claudio, Darwin and Fahad in just FIVE weeks, an excellent evening of music, poetry and just chillin' at the Parish Hall, Scout Hut and Friends Meeting House in central Edgware. Thanks to all of the SNTs that came into help out. Well done Laurence for winning the donut eating competition beating all of the coppers hands down. Please watch for a dedicated page about the event and the next one in December.... That's December 2008!!!
July 2008. This month we say goodbye to PCSO Neil Baldwin. Neil, an original member of the team, has been promoted to an instructor at Hendon, against fierce competition from other applicants. News on Neil's replacement as we get it.
June 2008. The team went to New Scotland Yard (the Met's headquarters) and were presented with a trophy as runners-up in the annual SNT competition. Effectively the Edgware SNT were placed 2nd out of 625 teams London wide. Well done team and watch out Hackney, we're after your winners trophy next year!!
April 2008. This really is a time for goodbyes. In addition to Mr Straughan (see below), we say farewell to PC Mike Paton, who joins another team within Barnet Police and PCSO Wayne Mercer, who has gone to Hendon to train as a PC. Good luck to you both. Mike is replaced by PC Steve Garty, who comes to us from Oakleigh Ward SNT. Their loss is very much our gain. Details about Steve appear on the Meet the Team Page.
Not quite so close to home, but just as important to Edgware, there have been some major changes in the Borough Senior Management Team at Colindale. We hope to have more details in due course.
January 2008 saw the departure of Sector Inspector Kevin Straughan to other duties within the Borough. Insp Straughan has been a fantastic champion of the SNTs in this sector in general and Edgware in particular. Both the panel and the team will miss his enthusiasm and support greatly; we wish him well with his future endeavours. In his place, we welcome Inspector Mike Carver to the West Sector.
The Edgware team started in early 2005. In their first year on the street, reported crime in the ward dropped by 10%, whilst in the second, it dropped a further 12%.
In early 2007 the team became aware of a young man dealing drugs around the north Broadfields estate area. A search warrant was executed at his address and a large amount of drugs were found. The suspect was subsequently sent to prison. In taking this effective action, a dealer was removed from the streets.
The team have shut down three cannabis factories within the Ward during 2007.
The team have also secured funding for youth diversion projects within the ward. This has led to the provision of equipment at both the St. Andrews (Broadfields) and Stonegrove youth clubs, as well as the provision of a youth shelter on the Stonegrove Estate.
In mid 2007, search warrants were executed at several addresses, leading to the recovery of a large amount of illegal drugs and also several firearms.
In October 2007, a search warrant was executed which led to the recovery of a substantial amount of illegal drugs and also a loaded firearm.
In early 2007, the team were highlighted on Sky News due to the large reduction in the number of shopliftings within the Broadwalk Shopping Centre, at a time when shoplifting had increased around the country.
In early 2007, whilst investigating a street robbery, PC Mike Paton spotted two suspects in Station Road who subsequently ran away. After a foot chase, he detained the two males and found stolen property on their person. These males were subsequently sentenced to a spell in prison.
In mid 2007, PCSO Steve Renny spotted two suspects breaking into a residential flat on Station Road. He detained the suspects and kept them there until Police arrived and made arrests. One suspect was wanted by Police for committing burglaries all around the UK, he was subsequently sentenced to a lengthy stay in prison.
In 2007, PCSOs Mark Prentice and Dionne Greene stopped an armed burglary taking place in a residential house in Edgware. By startling the suspects, these tenacious PCSOs stopped a violent incident in its tracks.
In late 2007, PCSO's Mark Prentice and Wayne Mercer detained a
male in Edgware Bus Station who was armed with an 8" knife
and had been seen to be waving it around.
